In 2009, I was alone in a hospital room with
my husband and 2 year old son Dylan who was just diagnosed with JMML. We were being admitted for a bone marrow transplant. I was so scared and nervous. Dylan wanted to go home. He was
restless and didn't understand what was happening.
The door opens and Conceicao walks in. My cranky restless baby melted into a pool of " hi's" and "batting eye lashes". He was
Conceicao became our primary nurse that night. She bonded with Dylan on a level I can't explain without crying. She answered every question I asked. She is so knowledgeable and genuinely caring. She didn't just go through the motions of her job, she went above and beyond. She made sure we understood everything before it happened. All of the nurses were wonderful but there is something extra special about Conceicao.
Eventually Dylan grew tired of going to the hospital. On days he needed to be admitted I would tell him we were going to see Conceicao, it was the only way to get him to the car! One night, we got to the hospital late around 11 pm. Dylan opened the door to the unit and walked in looking all around and calling out for Conceicao. I saw her at the end of the hall, she looked tired. I could tell she was having a busy night. There were lines being prepped for IV and meds lined up ready to disperse. She turned around to look who was calling for her. As soon as she made eye contact with Dylan he ran to her. She stopped what she was doing and dropped to her knees. Dylan ran to her and fell into her loving open arms for a hug.
There are nurses everywhere but the great ones are like gifts from Heaven. Conceicao is a gift.

At King Library, registered nurses, Sao Pires and Shunna Parks, of C.O.R.E. Healthcare Solutions have been offering almost monthly health workshops for the community since June 2015. Their small group sessions thus far, on allergies, cancer, diabetes, hypertension and weight control have been caring and informative. Along with receiving the latest in factual information on the subjects presented, attendees have been able to discuss their personal concerns and have been met with straightforward, uncomplicated, sincere and thoughtful responses.
A major goal of Sao and Shunna are the prevention of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. They strive to teach attendees to be cognizant of what they eat and how they exercise and to know their numbers (BMI, Blood Pressure, Glucose, Cholesterol) and keep track of them, so as to fully participate (along with their physicians) in the maintenance of good health. Attendees leave smiling, knowledgeable and well cared for, armed with charts and occasional prizes.
